Illnesses and the Things We Pretend We Understand but, in Actuality, Don't

If I had a cold
Would you sit by my side?
Would you tuck me in bed?
Would you caress my hair?
Would you make me some soup,
a hot drink,
or some tea.
Would you make sure I'm hydrated
and let me sleep in.

If I had the flu,
Would you insist
That I stay home from school?
From work?
Safe in bed.
Would you buy me medication,
Cough drops and such?
Would you hold out your hand
to my feverish head?

If I broke my leg
Would you stay by my side?
In the hospital bed,
Where I'd have to lie?
Would you visit me
Each and every day?
Or would you stay home
Till the day I was better?

If I told you "Mum, I think I'm depressed."
Would you hold me in your arms?
Would there be a caress?
Would you rush me to a doctor?
A hospital?
A shrink?
Would you make me stay home?
Or shrug it off;
It's not what I think.

If I told you "Mum, I have anxiety."
Would you even show concern?
Would you even care?
Would you even notice
The fear in my eyes?
Or would you say I'm foolish.
Would you walk away?

And if I told you "Mum, I think I've gone mad."
Would you lock me up
In locks and in chains?
Would you leave in a hospital
to deal with my issues?
Would you treat me like an animal?
I think to be tamed.

The author's comments:
I really think mental illnesses should be treated like illnesses. It's like; if you wouldn't shrug off influenza, you shouldn't shrug off depression.
