the best of us break

the best of us break sometimes.
we sit in our showers,
straightening shattered disks in bent backs,
pretending there is no water pump below
or painted, chipped ceiling above,
that hides a great, black sky.
act like we’re naked in a garden
and the sulfur rain dripping from the sky
is washing away
all the s***
we fell into today.
till the electricity flips off
and the water stops
and we know no change is raining on us from up high,
so we’re left to wash in our own cold blood
and as one,
slip into the drain and disappear
