Sarah, Do You Remember?

Sarah, do you remember
when we were just kids playing on the playground
together
and it was perfect
or so it seemed.
We weren't super close
but we were both kids so that didn't matter.
It was so easy for us to make friends when we were young;
it's not easy now.
Sarah, do you remember
we had the world in our fists,
how we could be supermen,
mommies with baby dolls,
investigators?
Sarah, do you remember
how the world was reeling us in even then
slowly
but it didn't slay us yet;
we looked at the tabloids
like big girls did
and believed them gospel
(or you did anyway).
You never had anyone to tell you
that you didn't have to be a celebrity
but only who you really were.
Sarah, aren't those memories sweet?
But memories aren't reality
because
we didn't get away;
the fishermen caught us after all
and served us on a plate
along with the other fish.
Our search for love ripped us
away from each other
and now you walk around
with a swollen belly
and I walk around
with scarred arms.
But oh Sarah,
aren't memories sweet?
