Out of Their Grips

It seems to me,
no matter what we do
we will just be knocked down.

Society pushes, squeezes, rearranges
trying to make us something we’re not,
something they want us to be.

A 12 year old girl looks at herself in the mirror,
she notices only the red spots
the big nose.
What she doesn’t see is the beautiful eyes and long blonde hair.

Most of us roll with the hits
and conform to what they say.

But we can’t let this happen.
We must leap from their grips like a dolphin jumping out of the sea,
fly free like a butterfly from its cocoon,
or run like a cheetah.

If everyone was just themselves,
yes, we would all be different,
yes, it would be an adjustment,
but would it really be so bad?

The best way to do this
is to stay positive
look at how beautiful you already are
and not how much better you could be.

You are smart.
You are beautiful.
You are free to be yourself.
