The Final Shot
Silently searching through the forest
we come upon a vast open field
 leaves swirling with the gusts.
 We stay downwind,
 careful not to scare
 the peaceful wanderers
who continue on with their daily routines,
unaware that a calm season has passed
and a dangerous one has come.

 Out of place
 I grasp the frame,
cold metal presses against my fingers.
I crouch down steadying the weapon,
my hands tremble as I focus in.
 With Dad judging behind
 I hesitantly pull the trigger,
 but miss.
 He confidently squeezes the trigger,
 and hits.
 Vulnerable and defeated
 the light leaves our eyes.
