I am me
I am from mommas pearl bracelets and daddy’s ol’ work bench
From swinging on the swing set in grandmas back yard
I am from momma’s home cooking on Sundays after church
From buttery biscuits to corn on the cob
I am from a small town where happiness comes from the derby races and boiled peanuts.
Where little girls run barefoot down long gravel roads to great daddy coming home from a hard day’s work
I am from papas fishing trips and learning to bait a hook
From papa telling me about when he was a boy and how much has changed
I am from bible studies on Sunday morning and square dancing in the barns
From momma telling me that everything was going to be okay
From cornbread and country fried steak on Friday night after the football games
I am from the highest point in little girl’s eyes, her daddy’s arms
From raspberry’s on my stomach and ticklish spots on my sides
The aches we got from laughing so hard telling stories all gathered around the Christmas tree
From going to the hospital to get Lima beans out of my nose
I am from a good southern family.
I am not ashamed of the person I have become to be
I am me.
