The heat retreats from chill hungry wind,
the leaves subject to their
short-lived war,
falling in death
do they part from the branches.
We see this and accept defeat,
that happiness has followed the leaves with them
to be decomposed.
But this is not the end.
The soft swirl of birds’ migrations,
a soothing silence in the dead October nights,
the heedful drift of pumpkin pie
and slow-roasted turkey
all hint that the happiness remains alive
underneath the amber leaves.
You must welcome the change
with willing hearts
as your ancestors did before you.

The author's comments:
This poem was created by simply looking out the window on a recent October dusk and reflecting on times past; memories, thoughts, feelings. It goes to show you that the realm of imagination can be prodded with a simple observation - be it anything you see, smell, or taste - to begin poetry. It truly is a wonderful gift of human beings; something that should be practiced regularly, not overlooked.
