Glass
I remember the night like a nightmare
When I danced on the river bed
And screamed obscenities into the open air
I reached for the bottle
To wash away the cloudiness of my interior
My eyes raced to find it
But it was shattered on the rocks
Everything was moving fast
Faster than a dream but slower than my thoughts
The black of the night
Threatened to drown me
And beat me to my core
It sang for a better tomorrow
But promised darkness still ahead
I took a shard of the the clear glass bottle
I put it to my lips and breathed out
Like it was the last of the air in my lungs
It was small and dirty
And sharp but thick
I looked through it
And saw the water rushing steadily
Consistently
I looked around me
To see hundreds
Upon hundreds
Of shards of broken glass
From nights before
