Dear Heroin

Dear Heroin

You always use to ask me
How were the shrooms?
The beer? The LSD? I’ll show you something more worthwhile than weed.
I can show you how to steal and lie.
Trust me, it’s all you need
to get by. Why go to school?
Don’t turn another page.
I’m so much easier
And I come in a 30 inch gage.
Heroin’s my name
I’ve been known to destroy lives.
Taking out actors, teenagers, fathers, wives.
People will leave you.
That’s just fine.
Follow me and you’ll be all mine.
Try to get rid of me?
What a joke!
Pretty soon you’ll have a needle, looking for a vein to poke.
Need some love?
That’s going to be hard to find.
But don’t worry because I’ll always be in the back of your confused mind.
Well, honey, before you start fooling with me, let me explain to you just how it will be.
For I will seduce you and make you my slave.
Trust and believe me when I say I’ve sent much stronger than you
to their grave.
You think you could never become a disgrace
and become too addicted to poppy seed wastes?
So you’ll start inhaling me one afternoon.
You’ll take me into your arms quicker than you can see the moon.
And once I’ve entered deep down into your veins
My cravings will nearly drive you insane!
You’ll swindle your mother just for a quick buck.
You’ll turn into someone so vile and corrupt.
You’ll mug and you’ll steal just for my irresistible narcotic charm.
You’ll feel contentment when I’m in your arms.
The day you realize the monster I’ve made, you’ve grown into,
You’ll solemnly swear you’ll leave me alone.
Just try getting me off of your back, the vomit,
the cramping, your stomach tied in knots.
The jangling nerves for just one more shot.
The hot chills and cold sweats, withdrawal pains, can only be saved by my liquid
deep in your veins.
There’s no other way, and there’s no need to look
for deep down inside you know that you’re hooked.
You’ll desperately run to the dealers and then,
You’ll welcome me back deep into your veins once again.
And you’ll return to me just as I predicted!
I know you’ll give me your body and soul. You’ll give up your morals, your conscience,
your heart.
And you will be MINE until DEATH DO US PART!

The author's comments:
This poem was written as a testimonial as to what I have lived thru, what I have endured and what I came to understand about such a horrible, dangerous drug. I want others to understand the pain and disappointment it can bring.
