He Chose Me

Up and about my love had once flown,
He could reach the moon and stars,
And took nothing for granted.
But he gave it all away to be mine.

We met when he was in the heavens,
And he looked down on this filthy earth,
Then his gleaming eyes came upon me,
The filthiest human of them all.

And despite my dirty rags and stained-gray skin,
He came down to me, to ask me, so gently,
"How can such beauty have come to such a state",
As if his words would shatter me down.

"I have had such a terrible past" I said through tears,
"A past worse than hunger, thirst, pain, and fire, all at once.
I am not beautiful, blessed one, I am shame,
No one dares look at me, because of my sins."

When I met his gaze, he was crying for me,
His eyes showed hurt and sorrow,
Sorrow that he can't change my past,
Hurt to see I was left to die.

At last, he spoke, with such sweet words,
"Come with me, and I'll take your rags,
And turn them to the gowns of your light,
I'll wash your skin till the sun kisses you once more."

Then he took me to the sea, where we still live in joy.
I am free from my rags and my skin is stainless,
But my beloved has never again gone to the stars,
Since he took my hand and lead me home.

And yet, on his dying breath many years later, had whispered in a smile, "I never regretted you."
