The Great Outdoors
As I sit on a bench,
That looks brand new,
I stare at my feet.
I can see the dirt,
I can see the plants,
I can see the pond,
And the bugs,
crawling around, in and around
the dirt and the weeds.
I look more but I am not amused. So,
I stare at my feet.
The trees rustle
As the cicadas hum
I look up to see
More trees, then a mosquito
Buzzes around my ears
Then my face, then my chest.
He decides to land on my foot. So,
I stare at my feet.
Afraid to look at the world
Surrounding me. My mind races
I think of school,
I think of work, of homecoming, and
I stare at my feet.
Surrounded by a sea
Of green. So much around
Me. Trees as tall as skyscrapers,
leaves as green as grass,
ground as rough and sandpaper,
benches new as baby.
And my classmates watch
the same thing I do
So,
We stare at our feet
