The Hide of a Friend
From the thick free falling hair of her tail,
To the solid affection in her eye,
Her love falls deep into my heart
As we prepare our “fight.”
We have been waiting for this day for some time,
We start bright and early to bathe and groom,
We fluff and puff for hours upon hours,
Finally, the time has come.
I rest my confidence in her, and she rests her trust in me.
As we walk into the show ring we feel each other tense,
But she knows, and I know,
We are there for one another,
We will not let anyone demote us,
And we will not give up our fight.
As she holds her head up high with pride, with no help from me,
I hold my head up high with nervousness,
With my show stick I set her in place, all four in a row,
She gives me a nudge and I calm a bit.
As the judge comes over to ask a few questions,
She holds her head high,
I answer accordingly, and he moves on to the side.
A few moments later, he returns,
With a smile on his face and a hand ready to shake,
I knew at that moment we had ended it.
We won our fight, never giving up,
We will forever treasure this moment,
The moment we became, the champion of the heifer show.
