And I'd Be Standing On Canal
Late at night,
When the city is at its loudest,
And I’m at my lowest,
I’ll look at your name.
Every now and then I actually press the phone,
And act like I’m going to go through with it.
As if I could really pinpoint you in any way.
I lie to myself and say that I just want your friendship.
How could it ever be that simple?
I remember when you grabbed my hand and asked me to stay.
I remember when I pulled you over to the candy rack to show it off.
I remember being nervous for the first time in a long time.
I remember you asking when we’d see each other again.
What the hell happened since then?
You know what’s even weirder?
Chinatown was a darker once you stepped onto Grand.
Maybe I really screwed it up that night.
Maybe they just don’t teach this at West Point.
Maybe there’s someone back home.
Maybe it was too early for this.
But I don’t want maybe.
I want to know.
I’m tired of wondering about this one uptown girl.
One call, one day, one chance.
So come back to the park,
Watch the fire twirlers and the tarot readers.
Just spend this one day with me.
