First Impressions
First day of school,
last day of freedom.
Life seemed to turn,
and put its back towards me.
I walked alone in the chilly, breezy hall,
no parent there to guide me.
I followed the piercing screech teacher
over chattering kids.
Walking into the classroom doorway,
an abyss of the unknown.
The smell of disinfectant in the air,
the taste of biscuits on my breathe.
Nervous and shy,
I wished I had a friend.
I glanced to the left,
I glanced to the right,
suddenly, a welcoming face caught my eye.
He asked if I wanted to play with blocks.
We laughed and we played
until the end of the day,
and I thought to myself,
“This isn’t so bad”.
