When I have a Daughter
Dear my someday Daughter,
Dream big, you can do anything.
Twirl in your pink dress
Never worry of whose heart is beating nearby
Don’t always be oblivious to the world
Nonsense will run in one ear and out the other
Don’t ignore it
For this nonsense is unique, to you
No one else thinks the way you do
You’re an original
Numerous thoughts and ideas will dangle by thin threads of lace in your mind of innocence
But be careful, for this thread is so thin,
It will tear when you begin to lose yourself
And I say,
Have no limits
No limits on your beautiful thoughts or ideas or wonders or dreams
Erase your negative thoughts and fill it by pouring gold in the holes they have left
Gaze at the stars
Look through your scattered thoughts
And remember what I am telling you
Cherish the way the clouds change shapes before your eyes
Because someday it will be people changing before your eyes
Not just the floating spectacles above
This may be drivel
But believe that if you dream big enough,
It will come true
This is what every parent whispers to their child
I can only hope that this will preserve your childhood
Yet how selfish of me
How selfish of me to allow you, my lovely, to become so vulnerable
You’ll grow up without fear
You’ll grow up without panic that new things can knock you over
So, what about when you fall?
How will I protect you now?
This will break my heart into a puzzle that I can never forgive myself for
These memories will make you stronger, wiser, and more mature.
But what happened to preserving that childhood?
This is why,
I tell you, yes
Dream big
Imagine beyond your heart can take
Let the wind sweep you off your feet, but don’t leave without giving mom a kiss
Baby, I’ll tell her,
The sun rises for you,
But don’t be upset when a rainy day takes over your feelings
And tears your heart out of your chest
And remember that I will always be here to relate to how heartbroken you may be
The stars won't always be out to sparkle for you, honey,
But know that there are just clouds blocking them
And those very stars still remember it is you, who they twinkle for
And on your days of down
Superman won't be there to save you
But you know what?
Be your own superman
Be strong and fight back
But don’t get rough
Just because this world is a rough place
Don’t stoop down to this level of rudeness and hate that will be tossed your way over and over again
Life will knock you off balance
It will kick you down when you’re wobbling on one leg
And just know to be ready for it to come right back after you when you think you’re safe from harm
Be ready to be tongue tied at times and to make mistakes
And know that your mistakes aren’t errors until you repeat them
Know that dealing with these difficulties and these cruel people is the only way to remind yourself
How much you love and value the important individuals
Because you know what?
Dreams do come true,
But don’t forget,
Nightmares are dreams, too.
Love,
Your someday mother
