A Storm in Space

What would it be like if there were storms in space?
Would we see? Would we hear? Would we know?
Lightning would strike, but no sound would be heard.
Just cold, blank silence.
All would be dark,
And stars would provide only glimmers of light.
Like glowworms overrun in a big, dark cave.

Then, a flash of light would appear,
But would disappear without a trace.
Like a shooting star, only seen for a moment,
Then gone.

If there were rain, it would stand, suspended in space.
Billions of droplets with no course,
No aim.
They’d blend with the stars that speckle the sky.
Some would fall to the earth, but disappear in the night.

What’s to show for this thing in the sky?
But a few drops of water, a quick flash of light?
All would fade away,
With age. With time.

You see, our lives are like this storm in the depths.
We’re like a quick flash of light,
Here, then gone.
We don’t make a sound as we pass from this world,
And we don’t leave a trace, but droplets of haze
That float through the ages, memories of our past.

We will soon fade away in the void of this life.
We’ll be all but forgotten,
Save for the memories of us that others hold.

So what about you? Will your droplets live long?
Or will they fade away? Will they soon be gone?
Because, in this world, there’s nothing we can do,
Time will go on.
The world will keep spinning.
Our lives like
A storm in space.

I wrote this poem to use the contemplation of an unusual event to make others think, and to motivate them to go out and make a difference in the world.
