My Granddaddy
My grandfather’s faith gave him hope.
With the worn leather Bible he read every night.
I’m not very religious.
My grandfather loved his wife, Alzheimer's and all.
With his oxygen tank and walker,
he checked on her bedrest-condemned self hourly.
He didn’t mind.
Though she couldn’t quite form a sentence,
everyone knew,
she didn’t mind either.
“That’s my man,”
She said, the words clear as day.
Her words accompanied by a small chuckle, just as
Robert Baker, Senior
passed away.
She knew, soon would she.
But she would rest in my Granddaddy’s heaven, happy at last.
