Now That I Have Fallen
Quite honestly,
I have always comforted you
in your times of sadness.
with great empathy,
I knew how to use
words to make you feel
better.
It comes naturally to me.
When you are sick in bed,
when you feel ugly,
when you feel fat,
when the one with your heart likes another,
are circumstances in which,
the endless pep talks flow from my mouth
and thoughtful compliments pour out of my heart.
As we hang up the phone, or end the embrace,
you call me “true friend”
and tell me that you love me.
Yet,
now that I have fallen,
you barely try to catch me.
I now realize
that expecting you to reach out
as I have done to you
countless times,
couldn’t have been more
wrong.
Maybe you assume
that I don’t need any help,
even when I tell you why I’m sad,
because I seem strong,
as I lend you a hand.
please pardon my laughter,
because that is
incorrect.
