I am like the fish that you caught
You caught me, and tried to decide if I was worth it
I didn't pass the test
You threw me back, but
No matter what
I will
Never
Be the same as I was
When you first reeled me in

It's hard to keep swimming
When I feel so broken inside
I feel as if I can never be happy again
No matter what
no one
Will ever make me feel the same
Something will always be missing

But just like the fish
I have learned I need to guard myself
You have taught me a lesson
That will stay with me forever
If someone comes along
Just as you did
I will not
Let myself fall into the trap
Or get hooked by their
love

The metaphor you used in this poem, I feel, might have been used before a myriad times. Nonetheless, you make it feel fresh, almost new. I can relate with this poem, the emotions of subtle self-hate, regret, sorrow, anger, and disappointment. Congrats on the Editors' choice. You deserve it.
