Gay Rights and Restrictions in the Country of Freedom
I live in a country
Where racism is illegal
Where hate is a crime
And judging people by the color of their skin isn’t a good use of time
I live in a country
Where freedom of speech is the first amendment
Where you can say whatever you want
And voice your opinion no matter how ridiculous it is
Where I live is a country
That sounds so free and lively like a bald eagle in Washington
But it’s not
Gays can’t always do what straight people can
Gays can’t always marry one another
Gays can’t always feel safe by just being themselves
I live in a country
Where love is love
But is it?
I live in America
Where people marry for the sake of a green card
For the sake of money and benefits
And for the sake of marriage and love
Where I live you aren’t as free as they say
You can’t necessarily do what you want
Because what if all you want to do is marry the love of your life?
What if you love he or she so much
To the point you want to be the one who’s there in the hospital with them at their lowest point after the fatal crash?
You want to be able to make the final decision for them because you know they trust you
You may be gay
You may be straight
You may be lesbian
You may love her so much
You could be transgender
You could even be questioning to the point you aren’t even certain anymore
It’s not fair to have to be restricted
In old metal chains that are no longer appropriate
Restricted in the country you thought was perfect
They say they’re making things better
They say they’re legalizing it and giving you rights that you so desperately want
But there’ll always be the people who disagree
'Marriage is between a man and a women'
They’ll say and you’ll just have to paddle through
You’ll have to pass the dangerous sharks in the water in your small canoe that they can rip apart so easily
As a straight person in America
Never take your rights for granted
Because some people, don’t have them
Some people don’t get to live like you
And some people, don’t want them to.
