A Trinity

My past hides in the shadows,

goes unnoticed

in the dark.

My present

is always present.

I can’t escape it.

It follows

and swallows

my every moment.

It is the small space

between did and do

know and knew.

The future is always ahead

I am forever led

by it.

I chase it down

but it slips around

the corner before I can get a look.

Like a book

that I try to finish

but the end gets farther away

refusing to stay.

I pursue the future

unable to change course

while my past pushes me from behind with force.

To the side

is my present

walking along with me.

Forward and back, I see

the road of my life

in the company

of three.

The author's comments:
This is a poem about the past, present and future. It characterizes these to show their active role in everyday life. I hope readers will see that like a trinity, these tenses are separate yet joined to create our opinions and views.
