My God Has No Sons

My God has no sons
My God does not choose prophets
To carry a written word into the world
So that people
Do not distort his scriptures
So that people
Do not justify their intolerance
With their interpretation of His laws

My God
Was not borne of Sunday school teachings
Was not molded like clay at regular masses
My God grew like a seedling in the cracks
Of the stifling sidewalk of an atheist upbringing

My God-
My strange religion
Does not carry the burden of proof
My faith requires me to be faithful
But for those that do not understand:

My God
Exists peripherally
I know that He is there
And from the corner of my eye,
I can almost see Him
But I turn my head
And He is gone

My God
Asks me every day to be a better person
But promises me no palace in the sky
My Bible
My Quran
My Scrolls
Are engraved on my heart
With the ink of my blood
And are subject to change
As I do

And

To My God
I pray not for miracles
I pray for strength
To make my own

And

Your God is different than mine,
As He should be.
Do not seek to impose your beliefs on me
And I'll do the same.
