Self-Expression
I’ve watched far too many people
Embrace conformity like a long lost friend
Bow to some glossy crooning messiah
And discover false power in a cult-like mob
Indoctrinated by a screen’s cold gaze
Stifled by those they call their friends
I observe, as they shed like snakes
Bit by bit in shining flecks
Outward signs of individuality
Is this really how we should live
Just because the magazines say so?
Life’s too fleeting for this foolishness
Normality must be eschewed, not commended
Our years should be filled with twisted paths
Strange nights at the edge of town
Unbridled thoughts, bizarre dreams
All hopelessly tangled
In some timeless melody
