The Old Man
The rickety rocking chair creaks
Like the fingers of the seated old man,
Tightly clenched on a mug
Extra hot, extra black, with one sugar.
Heavy snowflakes are bombs outside,
Slowly burying the cracked sidewalk with white.
The old man watches them through thick-rimmed glasses.
His nose sniffles and his face tightens,
Digging out wrinkles like trenches.
He coughs, choking on air,
And pulls his blanket tighter.
Outside, young children fire snowballs at each other,
Laughing like princes.
The old man shuts his eyes.
