Smothered

Swollen,
Bruised, broken
Bones and heart,
Screams that echo
Into the night.

Feelings of
Power, strength
Control?
Fear that dances
In her glazed eyes
Feeds your fire.

She's consumed,
Stray sparks that sting
Friends, families
Loved ones
That try to get close.

The flames lick
Her skin,
Once pure as ivory
Bear the marks
Of a love in its
Crippling glory.

A puppet,
Strings strained
What keeps her going
A promise,
"I'll change" -
Apologies thrown
Carelessly
But she runs
To catch each one.

Feast on a piece of
Her heart
Hollowed out
Light as a feather
Afraid she'll just
Float away
Slipping
Out of my reach
Into yours.

A fire
Leaves only ash
Remnants of her
Heart
Nothing to salvage
And no salvation
From you.

The author's comments:
Inspired by a friend in an emotionally abusive relationship. Hope it is relatable to others experiencing the same feeling of helplessness.
