mirrors
What if we could climb into a mirror and the only thing blocking us was our reflection?
We look with eager eyes, but hinted with mischief,
Bad fortune in our future.
They want us pulled in with them,
Eager for a “friend,”
Someone to come run wild with them.
Their arms, an exact replica of our own, grab us,
An equal match of course.
So both of us are stuck on both sides,
Not getting left behind,
But not getting yanked in,
We fear the mirror.
Scared of the epic battle that might be unleashed every time we look through.
So we avoid looking through at all costs,
Avoid the evil thoughts that
Linger, linger
On the other side.
But that evil twin in the mirror is nothing like us.
They are filled with self-doubt,
Judged by everyone around them.
Because we are taught and encouraged
To fear the mirror,
Encouraged to fight the image,
But we are both trying to get through to the other side
Because we are guaranteed
Something better.
But is something better worth the war,
The fight,
The struggle,
The battle?
So we fear the mirror.
We ask if we are pretty an only listen when it tells us no
Because a thousand nice things can never make us forget those few terrible things said about us, those few terrible looks given to us.
So we ask again and again and again
Mirror, mirror, on the wall who’s the prettiest of them all?
And listen when it tells us the girls on the TV,
The girls in the magazines,
The girls who are our best friends.
So our reflections
Dig their nails a little deeper in our fleshy arms
And pull a little harder on our shoulders.
But we are tired,
Tired of the swarm of bad thoughts that sting our minds
Every time we simply walk past a store window and see our reflection following us.
So their legs kick a little harder,
And their eyes become a little more venomous.
So we fear the mirror.
With jaws clenched tight,
Grinding a thin layer off of our solid teeth,
Veins popping out, threatening to burst,
Blue faced from the lack of air,
Our feet planted like a thousand year old tree,
We will not lose the battle.
Stay on our side.
At some point you have to smash the mirror,
Ignore the tales of bad luck.
The reflections made up the stories to stop smart girls like us from destroying them
And ignoring our reflections.
But even when they break,
The small shards distort our faces
And so we still fear the mirror
Because no matter how hard we try, we can’t fake out our reflection.
Step left, step right
It will always follow us, it can’t be shaken,
No matter how fast we step.
So we fight back,
We grab their arms,
Trying to pull them into our world,
But they struggle, they fight,
Terror written across their faces.
Scared of the thoughts we have grown so familiar with,
And we look back,
And we wonder,
Who the reflection is.
