"You cannot save people. You can only love them." -John Green

Beautiful things are in our world

But if we couldn't see them

We wouldn't know

It's true that we need something

To illuminate the sky

This is why the sun shines

I know a girl

Who's full of pain

She sings a song

A sad refrain

Lyrics of love and loss and lies

This is why the girl cries

Every story is spoken and heard

Full of meaning

Full of words

But then comes fear

Of uttering the wrong line

This is why the world lies

A burst of sparks

A burst of tears

A crime of passion

A life spent in fear

Too many words she could never hear

Trying to conceal her threatening tears

A final breath

A final sigh

This is why people die

The warmth in your smile

The value of your life

Stay with me awhile

To brighten the night

When you're here with me

I will not cry

This is why I call you mine

In case fate takes you

Before dawn

In case at sunrise

You're really gone

I'll take fleeting time

And hold you tight

This is why I say good night

Tears are shed

But tears are dried

Love comes slowly

But will arrive

People will come

And people will go

But then someone true

Will say hello

Please just know

There is not always a goodbye

And this is why you have to try

The author's comments:
Oftentimes during my freshman year of high school, I would go to the library rather than the lunchroom during my lunch period. The library is where I wrote This Is Why The Sun Shines. Recently, I edited the last stanza of the poem. I feel a connection to this poem, and it is my hope that others who come across it will as well.
