The Cage
Her cage confines her with rusty metal bars
And seemingly unbreakable locks.
It hides her in plain sight,
But in silence,
No noise to provoke humanity’s curiosity.
Safe from harms way,
Although it may try,
Harm can never slip through the gaps.
She can not travel,
Nor touch,
But she can imagine.
Imagine the touch of another,
Or the feeling of wind against her face.
Imagine the sea,
Even bluer than a cloudless sky
Or so she has heard.
Imagine the taste and smell
Of foods she will never try.
She dreams about the travelers that pass her by.
She wonders about their lives,
The languages they speak,
The words they say
Most of which she does not know the meanings of.
She lets herself dream of faraway places,
And foreign foods and objects.
She dreams of the water,
And the clouds,
And the green grass.
Willingly,
She loses herself in her imagination,
Never knowing that if she looked close enough at reality,
She’d realize that she had been sitting on top of the key all along.
