Is it such a crime?

To remember such a time?

A time when the people were protesting in Tiananmen Square,

For the crimes of the government was too much to bear.

They weren’t even doing anything,

Only the death of Hu Yaobang were they mourning.

But I guess their actions were not okay,

For Deng Xiaoping’s response was harsh that day.

There was a rain of bullets,

Over people who were just handing out pamphlets.

Many people died that day.

The authorities never needed to act that way.

Is it such a crime?

To remember such a time?

They’re not even aloud to mention a single word.

About anything concerning this that they have heard.

They just wanted the government to hear their voice.

To let the regime know that they had a choice,

To stop the corruption among the government.

But action was never taken, to the people’s disappointment.

Instead they ignored the people’s pleas,

And even forced some people to flee overseas.

Some people were even executed,

And more than a thousand more were prosecuted.

Is it such a crime?

To remember such a time?

Not even books about it were spared.

No information can ever be shared.

Even words online were deleted.

Videos and recordings annihilated.

TV broadcastings were always blacked out.

There was barely anything left about it, without a doubt.

Will the future generations even know about it,

About the actions that their ancestors were brave enough to commit.

With so little info about it, would they even care?

About what really happened that day at Tiananmen Square.

The author's comments:
I did a research report concerning this topic, and I realized how lucky that not all governments would react in such a way to peaceful protests. I wrote this poem in order to state that people do remember this time, although many who should, such as future generations living in China, do not.
