"When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature." -- Ernest Hemingway "If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don't write." -- Anais Nin

The twinge of hate she felt when she heard the screaming at 1 am
The silent tears and shaking of her body as she rode in the car to her great grandmother's house
The fear that consumed her when he came to see her the next day
The shock she felt when he shook and yelled at her
The pain she felt when she saw the holes in the wall
They showed evidence of his rage and her fear
The unbearable crushed feeling she felt on the way to see her grandmother in the hospital
The tear stained phone in her lap with a good friend on the other end
He still talks about her when he drinks
I still cry when I think of them
She stood there by his side even when the alcohol tore their family apart.
Nothing can fill these holes.
