The Depth of Silence
When you put it in the right place, it can elicit emotions varying on a large scale. In church, it can signify the beginning of self-reflection or remembrance. As you're standing in a museum in awe of the beauty of your surroundings, you become unsure of what to say. The wonderment you experience is not expressed, but implied by the gaping hole your mouth creates.
And just as easily, it evokes sadness and mourning. Whether it be at a funeral or a sporting event or any other social gathering, it can prompt seriousness and remorse.
Receiving it from your significant other may take on a few meanings: jealousy or anger. They get angry about your actions and ignore you until they feel you are sufficiently punished.
A story or movie uses it to create suspense, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, waiting for the climax, heart racing, anticipating.
Comedians use it to make a point, or add to the effect of the joke. A single facial expression can guide the audience to which way the comic decides to take the joke.
Set the scene: you're being reprimanded and being scolded by an authority figure. It's time for your punishment and they pause...creating...dread.
A person walking and thinking about the wonders and miracles of every day life uses no words, no communication. Just thought. If you stop and take your time, you can almost hear it. What is it?
Silence.
