The Deer
Driving home through the night,
My eyes struggle to stay open
Like the random flickering of lights in a subway.
Random.
Suddenly, waves of headlights appear
Consuming the darkness in both lanes,
With the unexplainable mystique of a mirage.
Unexplainable.
As my car continues to crawl along,
A shadow writhes on the ground,
The black swan performing her dark ballet.
Dark.
A buck convulses on the road,
Scarlet rivers streaming from its mutilated body
To paint the asphalt in beautiful, crimson streaks.
Beautiful.
A policeman exits his car with a gun,
And soon the deer’s fearful eyes take an eternal stare.
Random, Unexplainable, Dark, Beautiful.
Death.
