When I am 21
a pencil ready in a steady hand
a curious line ventures into the white expanse
ecstasy and freight
accompany the scent of independence
words I’ve known all my life
carry a new meaning and
taste tinted with the ebony coffee
my palate sprinkled with tastes of the world
a forefinger wipes dust off a lampshade
into a trail, now uncovered to the world
days when the hours are of minute importance
carving the dimensions of my dreams,
what was once was square, grey
into shapes of wings
that flourish with the colors in my eyes
these words I write today
merely a whisper
on the wind
