My War

This wasn’t my idea of traveling and sightseeing
We’re on the complete other side of the world and we still don’t know why
Each day we see planes dropping off troops then picking up coffins
How could such madness be so ordered?
Such a mystic land could be the home of such a domestic war
We watched as large jungles crumbled to the ground
and ember filled the skies
We ride in metal birds that seem to destroy everything below us
The loud noises and booms leave a constant ringing in our ears
It’s like the 4th of July every day and night
This war was nothing training camp could prepare us for
And that’s what makes it so exciting
The VC are always breathing down our necks
Out there you can never let your guard down
There’s no time to relax
You can sleep when you’re dead
I don’t know what I’ll do when I get back home
Will I even make it back?
Would I even go back?
The thrill of war is so much better than one of those white-collar jobs
The states are as much of a mess as it is out here in Vietnam
I can’t look back and I don’t have anything to look back at
The truth is, this is my home
