Outcast Sparrow
The sparrow chirps,
desperately trying to find a mate
like a nerd before prom.
He is unsuccessful
the other birds just fly away,
then they land atop a pole,
and silently judge
the other hideous sparrow.
Their judgeful eyes
never leaving him,
he feels their pity,
but will not accept it.
The sparrow hobbles on,
past the pole
that seats his despising rivals.
He is gone now,
but the others are still here.
Pecking quietly where he once walked.
No remorse, no regret
they do not feel shame.
They do not feel anything,
but hunger.
Perhaps the first sparrow
has finally found a mate
Perhaps things worked out.
Perhaps,
they didn’t.
