One bite, two bites, three bites, four.
A stick of celery and a handful of almonds.
One bite, two bites, three bites, four.
An apple and a cup of yogurt.
One bite, two bites, three bites, four.
A piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter.
A banana and a cup of milk.
“She’s making progress!” They say.
One bite, two bites, three bites, four.
A plate of chicken and a bowl of mashed potatoes.
Ice cream for desert!

One pound, two pounds, three pounds more.
Relapse.

A stick of celery and a handful of almonds.
One pound, two pounds, three pounds gone.
“I’m making progress,” you say,
But the words are a bittersweet victory
upon your tongue.
