We watch:
we may not be good at anything,
but we are good watchers.

We watch as those who
have pushed us
into the depths
of our own minds
are illuminated in praise.
We watch as
the girls and boys with
sharp blades for tongues
tell a crowd jokes--
jokes normally directed towards us.
We watch the girls and boys
with paper guns
write poetry
that twists and turns and enchant--
the words that we have panic attacks over.
We watch those who put us
down rise.
We see the dust in the spotlight;
we see the bloodstained dresses they wear,
their monster-teeth smiles.

We watch as they win,
over and over,
and each time they do,
we remember just how little we are.

The monsters laugh and
we stay quiet because
we may not be good at anything,
but we are good watchers.

The author's comments:
This piece is inspired was inspired by watching someone who had "stolen" a boy from me be constantly praised. Suffice to say that this made me feel rotten. I think that's a feeling a lot of people can relate to--standing on the sidelines. We become so unsure of ourselves that we just sit back and watch. This is for all those kids.
