The Fears of Tomorrow
Everyone changes, grows, develops
In the end, a few years from now
 You won’t recognize yourself
Over time, we become different people
Because of the places we go
 The people we meet
 The experiences we have
 The decisions we make
 This is our past
 And it is constantly growing
 Building along with us
 Our past is familiar
 And so it is comforting
But that doesn’t mean we should rush into its arms
And let it drag us back to what we already know
Nor should we hold onto it
 Like a stubborn child
Unwilling to give up a toy they’ve long since outgrown
 The past is for remembering
 Not living
That’s what the present is for
 To live, experience, enjoy
 Though the present is fleeting
 Quickly becoming a memory
That crowds minds filled with worries of the future
 Of the unknown, the unknowable
No one can predict what tomorrow may hold
No one can know, at least not for sure
Tomorrow, you may win the million dollar jackpot
Or break a leg falling down the stairs
 You may win a bet
Or lose in the state championship game
Getting up every morning is a gamble
And everyone has to lose sometimes
But then we have to pick ourselves back up
And throw the dice one more time
For the chance of getting a winning roll
Is too great to not play at all
We all must face the future’s uncertain darkness
And if we really cannot see the light
We’ll just have to develop night-vision
To look through what may now seem like the ruthless night
 And find the light again.
