"Fine"
I fell down
And scraped my knee
And screamed and cried
And you came down
And said “you’re fine”
And it was true
Because being fine
Sounded like
I love you.
My teacher took her life
And I cried
When I thought of all those people
She had left behind.
And you asked, was I alright?
And I wanted to say
I love you
And I don’t want you to die
So hoping you would hear it,
I looked up and said,
I’m fine.
You were stressed and beaten down
And just once, you returned
My harsh words.
I put my face to the window
And watched the world roll by
So you wouldn’t see my tears
And you said
“I’m sorry”
And I wanted to say
I’m sorry, too
And I love you
But instead I said
It’s fine.
The last box
In the new place
I will call my home.
You ask if I’m alright
Out here on my own
And I want to say
I love you
And you raised me right.
And I’ll miss you
And I’ll call you
But I just I say
I’m fine
