One and a half hours to get to a safe haven
Hiding from the demons that lurk in the shadows
Math, reading, writing, all of these subjects pulling you along
Risking your life to feed potential to the same beast
Bullets dance through the air that you inhale
Stepping foot on the pavement eyes trained to your left
Raging a black Jaguar lunges at you
But you are a skilled hunter and flash a warning at the killer inside
Bubbling in your stomach is a volcano, rage is trying to come out
Everyday you need to put a cork in your emotions
Cool against your chest lays a deadly secret
Fingers tensed into a ball;
Resisting the urge to reach under your jacket
Meaningless to others but powerful to you a symbol is shown
Ignoring the bait is hard, yet necessary
Jerking up the street exhausted comes a temporary bomb shelter
Showing your pass to the driver you find the way to your seat
Loud yet serene, here you allow yourself to relax
Still alert but now calm, your backpack floats off your shoulders
Placing the ear buds into your earlobes, you ease into your own world;
In this place you are always safe and you can focus on basketball
Slipping away from the world around you your eyelids close automatically
Screeching of tires forces you back to reality
Heaving your cement-filled backpack, you leave your seat
Thanking the driver for your rest you hop onto the asphalt
Scanning the malicious minefield meticulously you see your target
Looming ahead is the purpose for your trip;
One and a half hours to get to school

The author's comments:
I read a book with a character that was forced to walk through one of the most dangerous neighborhoods to get to school. After that I was inspired to write this poem. From this poem I hope people realize that while some live two or three minutes away from school others don't. For some the commute to and from school is deadly. When readers are done with this poem I hope that they try to help those in this situation in their community.
