It is a menace, a bloodthirsty mosquito
That sucks the red out of love
And the love out of life because who can love
When the minute hand tick-tocks
To the tempo of my heart beat at half speed
So much slower than the hour hand
And seconds never end as I rush through traffic
On tar streets passing cars, trees
And honk, honk, beep my way through
Only to speed walk then Ouch!
To stumble on potholes in the sidewalk
And grumble my frustration
I’m late, I’m mad because It won’t brake
Like the vehicle on 21st failed to do
And allow my distressed soul
To rest, rewind, refresh my mind
Then I hurry and hope for It to follow
But It listlessly lags behind because
It knows I’m not in charge of the day
That It will zoom and screech
At It’s own pleasure and pace
So I work, I slave, behave for the sake of my career
But I’m a tick- tock time bomb
When I find It smiling and laughing and sleeping
Now It is refreshed but I’m not because
Taxis are backing up traffic and horns honk
And pedestrians stroll across the pavement
Suddenly life is put on hold and I should stop
And breathe and relax and laugh and smile
How I yearn to stop!
But I can’t because It will never be constant
Or reliable or predictable
And I want to run home to break my clocks
Dismantle my watches
Scorch my calendars
And stare in celebration
As the measurements of this life
Disintegrate before my eyes
Because all too soon
I have run¬–


The author's comments:
Sometimes we feel as though we have all the time in the world and other times we feel as if there is not enough. I wanted to express this incongruous concept in a poem and I want people to realize how their perceptions of time influence their perceptions of life.
