My Rooftop

I tiptoe up the stairs,
My hands a-shaking.
Open the door, slip inside.
My rooftop’s been waiting.

Palms against the glass,
Breeze in my hair.
Heart in my throat,
Do I dare?

Feet don’t fail me now,
As I clamber down.
My home in the skyline,
Absent of a single sound.

The sun is just setting,
As I turn and lay back.
My secret hide-away,
I’ll watch the world go black.

The street lights turn on,
And I make my way inside.
Up on my rooftop,
All of my worries have died.

I leave my favorite place,
As I yank down the shades.
Everything is dark now,
And reality has fallen away.

I peek out one last time,
Then disappear out of sight.
I have escaped it all,
At least for tonight.

So my secret lays in wait,
For another sullen day.
When I come to clear my head,
My rooftop, it shall stay.
