Blackest of Black

The blackest of black, and still you shine through.
The blackest of black, and I can see you
Twinkling with your thousands of brothers and sisters,
You always make me smile for awhile.
It’s the blackest I ever did see,
Laying down by my faithful oak tree.
Breathing in the universe, I cherish what I have
For I know it will not always be.
The grass tickling my back to remind me that I am alive,
I squint and point my finger up, up, up high into the heavens
And try to count the stars.
Blackest of black, and still you shine through.
One, two…
I lost it all at a hundred, a thousand
Too many to guess, too many to see.
And still I wonder, what I might be.
For among the blackest of black, they must see
The greens, the browns, the blues, and… Me.
They see things they never thought they could.
Do they think I am a star?
I too am so far, painted on a canvas of one colour,
Of all colours.
The blackest of black, and I can see you.
When my eyes begin to blur with all the colours,
I see a picture among those stars.
I see my life, many lives, I see it all
Played out to me like a movie behind a waterfall.
When I think I've gone crazy that’s how I know I’m sane
For when the blackest of black turns white,
I close my eyes and count again.
