that perhaps the cider
had been the cause of our delirium -

and our kisses froze,
crackling in mid-air,
like the whispering of stars,
as soon as they’d left our mouths.

we sparkled and faded
into deep, silky night.

and i died a frozen footless maiden
in the snow.
