Morning Broken

March 24, 2013

Black shadow night envelopes me
As I wake my car from her sleep
Shed the wintry blanket
That clings to her like a frosty moss --
Sheets of ice.

Some particularly bleak days
I surrender to the numbing winter,
Drive cautiously,
Strain my vision through the frozen mist,
Pray for steady tread.

Other days I wish
The icy whispers of wind
Would blow the snow away,
Or for the sun to conquer night--
To mollify the winter shield.

But today
I weather the bitter frost myself,
Scrape away layers,
Shatter my ice glass sanctuary

A winter morning.

As a high school senior, I have experienced much apprehension regarding what I will do with myself after graduation. My poem expresses the antithesis of what is comfortable and what is unknown.
