It would make you feel better
To know you can leave your cone
Unattended and
No one would take one sweet creamy lick

Well,
I did it just this once.

I bet you’d love to hear those words
Drip from my mouth like
Curdled ice cream running down sticky fingers
As the path of melted yummy goodness
Leaves a trail of shame

Such an apology would mean
Every savory bite of vanilla
Was tainted with remorse and disgrace
And that
Would be a sin

This poem was inspired by William Carlos Williams' poem, This Is Just to Say. When I first read the poem I didn't like the simple language and short length, but when I kept reading it over and over, I really began to appreciate it the subtle depth.
