How fragile the heart
Of a girl in love
It bleeds through her sleeve
Leaving trails behind her
“Come find me”
It beckons
“Come fix me”
She lays it out
Her heart
For everyone to see
Only to see it broken and bleeding

She carries it with her
In a knitted bag across her chest
Hoping it will heal on its own
But hearts grow bitter
While stitches may heal wounds
Memories never heal
Words scare
and blood stains
a heart is hopeless
as an animal with no senses

But she saw him
He held his heart
In a bag across his chest
Held together
With duct tape and staples
No longer was it a deep red
But a bruised purple
It beat slowly
As his eyes sunk into his skull

She gave him her heart
Careful, don’t break it
He held it
Marveling at its stability
He wondered
Just how much it could take

He pulled out the stiches
One by one
it crippled
Withering
She watched
As her heart
Was demolished

When it was over
He smiled
Looking at the girl
An empty cavity in her chest
And an empty bag slung across
Her chest
Her heart
Couldn’t take anymore
And she didn’t want it too

He held it out to her
A solemn smile graced
Those lips
She had loved so much
The twinkle in his eyes
Was blinding
Everything about him glowed
With triumph
And satisfaction

He
Broke her
Finished her
Let her down
And betrayed her
“Sorry”
He whispered with a smile
Gawking eyes
And a giggle hiding in his lungs
It’s ok
It was beating for you anyway

You grabbed me with that opening line. Classic. Nice start to a nice poem.
