A sleek, black exterior
Buttons distributed equally
across its façade
Slim and sexy yet durable
An LED screen that is crystal clear –
This object has many uses.

Its screen tells us the day’s events
Its messages bring us news
both good and bad
To some, it is as essential to our existence
as food and drink
Its effervescence can be addicting
Eyes glued to its tangible light
It bombards our senses with information
Dropped and battered, it acts resiliently,
Only dying at night with a battery low.

It is truly a symbol of our time
Replacing our basic connections
to our fellow humans
A barrier between us and those we love
Able to be hidden behind
and dampen the sharp pain of heartbreak
It is essential to our modern society
With new breeds “smarter”
than the last
It is an augmentation to our human race
Yet an incumberence to our
ability to communicate face to face
It is a cell phone.
