The Alchemy of Living

It is widely accepted that one’s gold
Growing older, tarnishes
Turns by some alchemical tragedy from gold to tin
Glorified only in the most mundane of efforts
Never thinking perhaps gold can be gained back
Just broken, battered, unclean evermore
A disaster that could never be remedied with a miracle

Or could it?

Breaking is easy
So many weaknesses
So much to hurt

Falling apart is simple
A little push to the edge
Gold is lost, scratched away

This wear-and-tear world
Leaves no other option

Or does it?

Cracking is easy
Pushed down til it shatters
Clinging to nothing, everything

Hate is simple
No positives given
But a blade to your skin

This dog-eat-dog world
Has swallowed you whole

Or has it?

Sickness is easy
Surrender to today’s
Ever-present attacker in the mind

Numbness is simple
Emotions out of play
Dead eyes veil the inner flatline

This cold and hard world
Must have an escape

It does.

Fixing is hard
So many holes to patch
Myriad wounds

Coming together is difficult
Back away
Take a deep breath

Singing birds of this world
Croon notions of hope

Rebuilding is hard
Sew up the tatters
Hold the hand offered

Love is difficult
Whatever the number
Faint scars still hurt

Light up this dark
Claw up to the sunlight

Healing is hard
Opposing the lies
Ingrained in your mind

Feeling is difficult
Emotions fight for dominance
Scared eyes seeing all

This bright and bold world
Is its own escape

It is widely accepted that staying gold isn’t easy
But as with all disasters
With a lot of work
A lot of love
And open eyes
Tin can be made beautiful
Perhaps not standard-issue gold
But something stronger, with more character
Tin to titanium
Is the alchemy of living.

I've recently taken it upon myself to deal with my self-harm, self-esteem, and self-image. It's been really difficult, but I felt I could give a bit of closure to put my story into writing.
