I Hear America Ringing and Dinging
I hear America ringing and dinging, the synthesized tones I hear,
Those of doorbells, dinging as you invite visitors inside,
The alarm clock ringing as you ignore it or stretch to turn it off,
The computer dinging as you turn it on, or turn it off,
The home telephone ringing as you receive a call, the cell phone dinging as you receive a
text message,
The television ringing as you watch your favorite television show, the fax machine
ringing in the other room,
The oven dinging, the timer’s signaling the time, or the food is done, or that time is up,
The beautiful ringing of the church bells, or of a new song, or of the video game winning
or defeated,
Each ringing and dinging what belongs to it and to nothing else,
Loud when they are on—they silence when they are off,
Ringing and dinging with loud synthesized tones.
